arrival in muscat international airport

Four-wheel drives are mandatory to travel into the mountains so we have arranged private jeeps for all guests arriving for our Practice Reel in Jebel Akhdar.   All you need to do is choose a flight that arrives in Muscat in the early morning, visit the Arrivals Duty Free Shop (Muscat is a dry country so you may need reinforcements), pass customs, and your driver will be waiting to whisk you and your luggage into a four-wheel drive for a pleasant 2.5 hour drive into the mountains.

Jebal Akhdar, meaning ‘Green Mountain’ in Arabic, is part of the Al Hajar mountain range.  One of the most beautiful regions of Oman, the Jebel Shams, or Mountain of the Sun, is around 3,000 metres high.

Designated by Sultan Qaboos as a nature reserve, the area has conserved its unique and fragile biodiversity and a pristine, untouched beauty due to the fact that the Sultan has governmental controls in place that only allow 4x4 jeeps into the park.

The Alila HoteL Jebel Akhdar

jabalakhdar-about.jpg

The Alila Hotel, perched 2,000 metres above sea level, is spectacular. The hotel, which has been carefully constructed in perfect harmony with the surroundings, is located close to the Saiq (pronounced ‘Sirq’) Plateau and surrounded by craggy summits and steep gorges.  Far from the bustle of modern life, the region offers an escape to solitude, nature, fresh air and stunning views.  In every direction lie mountains, small hamlets, uninhabited villages, caves and canyons.

Even with modern facilities and extraordinary levels of attention to detail, it is Alila’s ability to integrate rich cultural influences that heightens guest experience. A walk through the lobby immerses visitors in village life; a traditional majlis invites a moment of zen, while rose pattern work pays homage to the damask roses endemic to the region’s Wadis. Outside, the bubbling Al Falaj water system creates a meditative ambience for those enjoying some quiet time on the terrace.
